The Rise of the Trade Unions?

The great breaking news of the weekend comes from Chicago where window workers have opened wide the door to our Solidarity Trade Union past.

The employees of Republic Windows and Doors, 1333 N. Hickory Ave., are keeping their factory open by seizing it.

I am working on a trek to Chicago to thank these Brothers and Sisters for this Christmas gift, one that would make Chesterton and Dickens proud. We will do our best to pass the example onto the good autoworkers we know.

The factory phone number is 312-932-8000 but I got the corporation's recording. It does contain directions to the plant. If you live in Chicago, you may want to drop by and thank these heroes.

God bless these True Trade Unionists!

Hi Tom,

This is reminiscent of "Fábrica Sin Patrones" (Factories Without Bosses) tile company in Argentina.

I was glad to hear Obama voice his support of these workers. I hope they get every bit of what they're owed and I hope the owners of this company get properly disciplined or fined. When I first heard this story I could not understand that they thought they could even get away with this - but the fact is - they would have gotten away with it if these workers hadn't stood up. Kudos to all of them.

"The Take" was good but hardly promoted by the Big Unions here where Labor/Management "Partnership" propaganda is all the rage.

I'm sure knees are knocking at AFL-CIA and UAW, IAM, etc. headquarters over their concern that this Chicago action is getting major media coverage. As you may know, this plant is represented by a UE Local. The UE is an outsider, Left Union to the AFL...which isn't all bad. (Hard to imagine any AFL affiliate doing anythign close to this courageous, common sense action.)

I am waiting on a call from a UAW friend in Cleveland who thinks we should go to Chicago this Wednesday.

I would want to pass out a flyer there promoting this Blog. If anyone has ideas about what else to present in this flyer, particularly as a means of introduction & staying in touch, please let me know asap.

Hi Tom,

Is the deadline tomorrow night? I have a flyer all set that I could add The Review to. I just need to touch it up and make it into a PDF

Hi Richard,

Snowing here now. Looks like it may be Thursday. Send me the PDF and I'll get it printed.

Thanks Richard!

I have read some articles about this situation. I understand the employees want and deserve to be paid. But where is the failing company supposed to get the money? Why should BofA have responsibility to loan a failing company money? This does not seem like justice.
